Throughout the 70s and 80s, a dramatic evolution started in the area of environmental regulations. In the midst of these rapidly changing government mandates, numerous technological advancements were made, as business and industry raced to keep in compliance.
One such technology to emerge during this time was solids dewatering. New regulations required that all solids bound for landfill must be free of liquids to the point that they could pass a paint filter test. Dewatering succeeded in filling this need.
The dewatering industry took a leap forward with a unique, fine-tuned process developed by Ron Harris, industry veteran and founder of Spectrum Environmental Inc., in Louisiana, and recently Canadian Separation Technology.
While working with conventional equipment used in dewatering filter presses, belt presses, centrifuges, drying beds and other methods Harris developed and patented a unique method of solids dewatering he named the Turbo Phase Separator filter container.
Designed to minimize the handling and exposure of personnel, the Phase Separator is a heavy-duty, leak-proof container available in several sizes
and models. They have a stainless steel mesh liner, which covers the

entire inside surface area of the container and spaced several inches from the walls and bottom of the container.
In the optimum use of this equipment, a disposable filter is placed into the container covering the entire inside surfaces and is supported
by the stainless mesh, Harris said. It works much like a giant coffee filter. Sludge, slurries and waste are put into the container by pump or mechanical method. The liquid is
allowed to drain out, leaving the dewatered solids in the filter. The container is then transported, dumped and returned to be refilled.

The optional Vacuum Loadable Turbo Phase Separator is completely enclosed for containment of volatiles and odours.
In the initial testing and development of the Phase Separator filter container, some major problems with conventional equipment had to be overcome. A great deal of time and effort was devoted
to resolving the challenge of material sticking to and plugging the filter cloth or screen. The solution that proved to be most successful was the disposable filter cloth media as opposed
to the fixed screen, as is used in other designs. Any plugging problems are quickly disposed of with each load of solids, and an added benefit is that the container is returned clean.
Additionally, the Phase Separator design also makes it much easier to clean out any solids that may have gone through the filter and built up in the bottom of the container.
Welding galvanized grating to thick steel supports welded to the container minimized the effects of rust and corrosion on the longevity of the filter support systems. Stainless steel strips are then welded to the grating at all points necessary to attach the stainless steel mesh with stainless pop rivets. The end result is a very resilient filter support system that is able to resist corrosion, rusting and demanding service.
A desire to achieve a faster dewatering rate for the materials in the top center of the container led to yet another improvement in the system.
Harris was able to increase the dewatering rate by placing a filter dividing wall vertically lengthwise in the

container which increased the filter surface area by about 33% and cut the pathway for water to access free flow space by about 60 percent, thus
greatly increasing the dewatering efficiency, reducing time required and resulting in a drier material. Numerous U.S. and
foreign patents have been secured with others pending for both the original design and subsequent improvements of the Phase Separator filter container system. These patents have prevented copying of this technology by other companies, whose lack of know-how and attempts to circumvent have suffered from critical problems such as material sticking, plugging, slow dewatering, premature unit rusting, smaller volumes per load, and leaking doors that have resulted in environmental consequences.
The Phase Separator has been successfully used for over a decade in a wide range of industrial and municipal applications to effectively dewater all kinds of sludge, slurries and waste.
Turbo Phase Separator users have reported that the system is more efficient, longer lasting, safer to operate, and less demanidng to maintain
and clean. Some of the additional advantages include:

For larger requirements, the patented Concentrator SRCU custom-designed units will continuously remove and concentrate solids
and floating materials from medium to major flow process streams. The slurry stream flows into the SRCU at one end, floating materials are skimmed from the top; solids are removed from the
bottom, while the clean clarified water discharges from other end.
In processing very fine or low-density solids, optional polymer pretreatment or other methods will facilitate the efficient removal and subsequent dewatering of these solids.A service to
evaluate specific solids dewatering parameters and recommend the polymer of choice is provided by RMS.
Installations include dredging and pipeline cleaning, discharge stream clarification, wastewater treatment, potable water treatment, storm water treatment, power generation plants, animal processing, food processing, petroleum refineries, drilling mud, hydrocarbon wastes, API separators, oilfield services, vacuum truck services, mining and quarries, mineral recovery, metallurgical processing, pulp and paper mills, metal and plastic machining and manufacturing, grease trap collection, septic waste, cooling towers and heat exchangers, shipyards, chemical processing, bio-hazard remediation, process and precious solids recovery and transfers, and as specified in projects by consulting engineers.
